Where does Porridge come from?Updated 2 months ago
When most people think of porridge, they immediately think of Scotland. However, it is less well known that Germanic peoples were already cultivating and preparing oat flakes in Central Europe 1000 years BC. Nevertheless, porridge as we know it today originated in Scotland. There, it was eaten by working-class families, especially for breakfast, because it was filling and easy to digest. Traditionally, the cereal flakes were warmed with water and a pinch of salt and often served with cream or buttermilk.
Even today, the Scots are still enthusiastic and proud porridge lovers. There is even a championship in which the best porridge is chosen every year. Caroline Nichols, the founder of 3Bears, even took part in this in 2018. The film can be seen on the 3Bears YouTube channel. More information about the “ World Porridge Making Championship” is here and general information about porridge is on our website under Porridge.
